Part of what you pay in, a small part usually, goes into a cash account. You can borrow up to 90% of the cash account amount.

In any case, there is no reason to go for endowment,moneyback insurances unless they are ULIP based. Classic(non-ULIP) endowment etc plans give you a return of 3-5%.
