Is There Anyway To Find A Life Insurance Policy Without Any Paper Work?

Posted June 27, 2009 – 10:16 am in: structured settlements FAQ

My father as passed away and we are unable to find any paper work from his life insurance! He paid everything my cash so there is no trace.

There is no central data base for all insurance policies. It would be impossible to keep up. Go through all his records. He should have gotten receipts if he paid in cash. Call where he has his car and house insured, if he did. Other than that, you just have to search through all his papers to see if you can find the name of a company.

No. There is no “central database”. You can’t put it into an unclaimed funds database, because there aren’t any funds to be claimed until a claim is made, the insurance company does NOT find out about the death until you file the claim.
And you CAN’T pay for a life insurance policy for cash – I don’t know of any companies that will do that – they all want money order, check, or eft from your checking account.
Most people die without life insurance in force. Whatever reason leads you to believe he HAS life insurance, you’ll have to backtrack to that, and look for a paper trail. If he has no bank account, I seriously doubt he’d be the type to buy life insurance.
Oh, you COULD check with his attorney. They might know. No attorney? That makes it even more likely he didn’t have any – no bank, no attorney, no estate planning . . . likely no insurance. Sorry.

I think yes, if you know the name of the insurance company.
If you do then call them and offer a name and social security number. They should be able to trace any policy in force.
If you don’t know the name of the company, then you might try offering that information to insurance companies in his state and then try all the major companies, one by one and keep your fingers crossed
    Good Luck!
