If I Signed Over My Rights To My Life Insurance Policy, Could I Still Change My Beneficiaries?

Posted January 18, 2010 – 10:17 pm in: structured settlements FAQ

When my husband divorced, he couldn’t pay for his life ins. So she took it over if he signed away his rights. I didn’t think that was possible.

Once you give the ownership of the life insurance policy to someone else, the policy is THEIRS. Only the owner can change the beneficiary, and you can’t take the policy back again, if you change your mind.
No. it’s now HER policy. He cannot change the beneficiary.

If you’ve assigned your rights to a 3rd party, the only way to change beneficiaries is if the 3rd party agrees in writing.

Yes, it’s possible for someone else to own the policy and only the owner gets to decide who the beneficiary is.

The owner of the policy has the right to designate the beneficiary.

    No.
Yes, you can sell your life insurance to a 3rd party. Once it’s sold, you can’t change the beneficiaries as that would freeze out the 3rd party.
