Policy in papers; check stubs for an insurance agency; talk with his local insurance agent are about all you have.

Well, there IS no central database, where you can pop his name in and have the answer come out.
The wife is going to have to go through all his papers and look for either cancelled checks written to an insurance company, or look for other communication like a policy or invoice, from an insurance company.
If he was employed at the time of death, she can also check his HR department, to see if any group life was in place.
The spouse or estate executor is the ONLY person that anyone will talk to, so you’ll have to get that paperwork rolling when you file his will in probate court.
Something to keep in mind . . . if he had no will, he likely had no life insurance, either. Roughly 70% of the people in the US die with no life insurance in place.
