Did You And Your Spouse Discuss Life Insurance And Coverages Together?

Posted July 21, 2009 – 5:01 pm in: structured settlements FAQ

I currently have life insurance but didn’t really discuss it with my wife when I got it. I think maybe now looking back I should have been more open and discussed it with her. Is this something I should discuss fully with her?

My husband and I both discussed our policies before buying/paying into them.

Depending on the state in which you live and the type of policy it is, it may be marital property, and so might the premium you purchase it with.
It is certainly something which should be made reference to in your estate planning, so your executor knows how to disperse the funds. This does not have to be your spouse.
My rule of thumb generally is, would you want your spouse to make a decision like this without bringing you in on it? There’s your answer.

Im still on my ex insurance policy as beneficiary. He doesnt trust a lot of people, but he trust me. Should he remarry again then everything will get transferred to her name. I would say it MUST be your spouse just because your married to them. Make it somebody you trust with your life. If that person isint your spouse I would be worried.

Yes, because when you die, all your debts will be her responsibility to pay off.
She will need to know all information about your policy and where you keep your policy so that she can access it when it’s needed. And you need to know about hers as well.
